Vancouver's Chinatown has thrived since the 1890s, showcasing vibrant colours, exotic cuisine, and a rich history and culture.
3rd largest
Chinatown in North America
Initially, the Chinese community arrived to work in mines and on the Trans-Canada railway. Centered in the heart of downtown and spanning about six blocks, this historic area is framed by East Pender Street, Gore Avenue, East Georgia Street, and Carrall Street on each side.
In 2011, Vancouver’s Chinatown was designated an official National Historic Site of Canada.
Chinatown is a blend of the traditional and the contemporary, where Asian specialty stores and dim sum restaurants coexist with modern boutiques. Sidewalks are lined with an array of goods, from herbal medicines to silk garments. The area, particularly along Pender between Columbia and Main streets, is experiencing a renaissance, with young entrepreneurs injecting new energy into this historic locale.
