Overview

The crossroads has become well-known as one of the city's most beloved and photographed spots. Its origins can be traced back to the early years of Vancouver, when Granville was still a small village. The square gained fame as it was home to the first tavern in the area. John Deighton, affectionately known as "Gassy Jack" for his talkative nature and storytelling skills, fulfilled a request from his close friend Captain Edward Stamp, the owner of the Hastings Mill, in 1867. Deighton opened the first bar on the southern banks of Burrard Inlet at Stamp's insistence.
