Victoria may be the capital city of our gorgeous province, but I contend Vancouver is the Self-Propelled Adventure capital of Super Natural British Columbia. What do I mean by self-propelled adventure? In truth, there are no rules or classifications, however, to be recognized as a self-propelled adventurist, you must embark on a journey that is solely human powered. Bike, hike, paddle, run, walk, glide, or skate. The only limit is your imagination, and maybe your fitness level.

Vancouver has embraced the concept of active transportation and “self-propelment” for many years. Neighbourhood Greenways, dedicated bike paths, waterways and our world-famous Seawall invite those ready to embark under their own steam, and frankly going “natural” in Vancouver, puts the hectic city lifestyle in perspective. Fresh air, fitness, and fun are the heart of all human powered journeys.

Here are four of my favourite Vancouver routes:

The Seaside Greenway – Enjoy a dedicated shared access path along Vancouver’s iconic shoreline and through Stanley Park. Views of the Convention Centre and Coal Harbour, highlight the route with stops at Granville Island, Kitsilano Beach and Spanish Banks. Perfect for runners, joggers, walkers, rollers and strollers!

Pacific Spirit Regional Park – Immerse yourself in the lush Coastal rain forest and explore 763 magnificent hectares of forest, foreshore and beaches.

Central Valley Greenway – Consider venturing beyond Vancouver’s borders and propel yourself along 25km of regional greenway linking Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster.

False Creek – Grab a paddle and savour unique views of the downtown core from your canoe, kayak or paddleboard.

Need gear? Local bike rental shops will set you up or take advantage of Mobi by Shaw Go, Vancouver’s new bike share program. Water pursuits more your style? SUP and kayak rentals are readily available.
