Local Chef Shares Insider Tips on his Hometown
Cuisine is an integral part of the fabric and culture of Vancouver. With multicultural influences, seasonal and fresh local product, Vancouver chefs create delicious meals daily. The city has no shortage of culinary talent, so we asked a local chef to share some of his favourite restaurants, places, and things to do in his hometown when he’s not busy creating culinary masterpieces and, instead, is enjoying some well-deserved time off.
Born and raised in Vancouver, renowned Chef Michael Robbins of Annalena, in the Vancouver Kitsilano neighbourhood, serves up a modern Canadian cuisine tasting menu nightly. Every month Chef creates a new ‘chapter’ that highlights what’s in season, fresh and sustainable. Visitors enjoy elaborate tasting menus that are beautifully plated and paired with innovative cocktails and interesting wines.
Favourite Vancouver neighbourhood:
Main Street / Mount Pleasant. I grew up just off Fraser and went to school on Main Street, and I’ve lived on Main for a good part of my adult years. I’ve seen it evolve my whole life and always feel at home when I’m on Main.
Favourite place to get your caffeine kick:
This will be no surprise, but my favourite coffee shop is Their There. The whole concept of Their There is what a coffee shop would be if the Annalena team opened one. On a personal level it’s hard to beat.
An afternoon Vancouver adventure:
Granville Island is always fun, and must-stops should include Lee’s Doughnuts and Oyama Charcuterie. I’d also get on the water, hang out at Kits pool, or head to Spanish Banks for a beach hang.
A well-loved dining spot in your neighbourhood:
I really enjoyed Published on Main, the menu is always evolving and very delicious. I also recently went back to Say Mercy! and we had a great meal there as well. There are a ton of good places in our neighbourhood, but those are a couple I love.
