There’s nothing quite like a good ol’ fashioned pillow fight! When the feathers get flying, you know things are getting serious! There’s also nothing quite like a flash mob and Vancouver has become known for these entertaining acts of randomness (e.g. Zombie Walk, No-Pants Skytrain Ride, etc…)

On Saturday, April 1, at 3pm, you’re invited to take part in the next Vancouver flash mob: the always exciting celebration of International Pillow Fight Day. What’s the best way to celebrate? Why, with an epic pillow fight, of course!

If you want to participate:

Typically, the Vancouver pillow fight starts at exactly 3:00pm and runs until 3:30pm and is held on the Robson side of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Make sure to bring along a pillow full of feathers – it’s more fun that way. The idea behind a flash mob is to make it seem unexpected. The “rules” include:

  • Don’t be in the location until the exact minute before it begins
  • Hide your pillows
  • At exactly 3:00pm, rush in screaming “PILLOW FIGHT!!!”

Most likely, there will already be a big crowd of people milling around the specific location, so it’s not too hard to figure out where to go. Also, don’t feel like you need to really hit hard with your pillows. Even though they’re made of feather or foam, they can still pack a punch if you swing really hard.

Before you know it, the fun will be over. Most people stop fighting after about 15 minutes. You’re encouraged to hang around and clean up any stray garbage / feathers.

There are a few additional things to consider if you’re participating in the pillow fight:

  • Soft pillows only!
  • Swing lightly, many people will be swinging at once.
  • Do not swing at people without pillows or with cameras.
  • Remove glasses beforehand!
  • The event is free and appropriate for all ages.
  • Wait until the signal to begin.
  • This event is more fun with feathers!

If you just want to watch:

If your idea of fun doesn’t include swinging around a sleeping device, you can always hang back and watch the action from the sidelines. The action will really start at 3:00 pm, so make sure you get your photos as quick as possible because everything stops after 15 minutes or so. The high-action pillow fighting can make for some amazing photos.

But, if you do have a camera, try and keep your distance from the fray. Participants are told to never hit anyone without a pillow, but accidents can happen in the heat of the moment.

The Vancouver Pillow Fight is part of the celebration of International Pillow Fight Day that will be celebrated in almost 40 cities around the world on April 1, 2017.
