Billboard’s #1 hip-hop act headlines inaugural outdoor festival in Vancouver
Migos and Tory Lanez top a bill that includes some of today’s hottest hip-hop artists at this spring’s Breakout Festival. The inaugural edition takes place June 9 and 10 at the PNE Amphitheatre.
The outdoor hip-hop and R&B event also features 6lack, Lil Pump, A-Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Ski Mask the Slump God, Ybn Nahmir, Kodie Shane, Pressa, Wondagurl, Brevner, Manila Grey, Illyminiachi, Mcevoy Withinroots, Acdatyoungn****, Daamcp, and 2hunnit. Below is a look at some of the artists.
Migos—A hip-hop trio from Georgia, Migos formed in 2009. Early last year, the act’s second album culture debuted at the top of the Billboard Top 200 chart; their just-released 24-track second album, Culture II, did the same. This makes them the fifth rap group ever with more than one #1 album (the others are A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and D12). Hits include 2016’s “Bad and Boujee” (featuring Lil Uzi Vert) and last year’s “MotorSport” (with Nicki Minaj and Cardi B).
Tory Lanez—The Toronto-based rapper and singer received recognition for his 2014 mixtape Lost Cause (2014) and the singles “Say It” and “Luv.” Lanez released his debut studio album, I Told You, in 2016.
WondaGurl—The Canadian record producer (aka Ebony Naomi Oshunrinde) has worked with prominent hip-hop artists, including Jay Z, Drake, SZA, Young Thug, and Kanye West, among others.
Canadian record producer WondaGurl performs at the inaugural Breakout Festival in Vancouver. From the website: “For its first year, BREAKOUT Festival intends to bring a one-of-a-kind experience to festival goers of all ages. Taking place at Vancouver’s historic PNE Amphitheatre, both one and two-day festival tickets will include access to not only the performance area but a pass to Playland Amusement Park as well. With a food truck area, a VIP section, 19+ bars, alcohol-free zone and more BREAKOUT aims to lead Vancouver in hip-hop / R&B music festival experiences.”
The event is a co-presentation between local concert promoters Timbre and Crescendo1. Founded in 2015, C1 started Vancouver-based events Black Fridays and BREAKOUT. The promoter supports Vancouver artists and provides coverage on what’s hot in hip-hop culture and fashion.
