Vancouver Neighbourhoods: Gastown

Cobblestone streets. Heritage buildings. A famous whistle-blowing steam clock. Gastown is where Vancouver began, and where its past and present collide in a nostalgic yet exciting way.
Today, the neighbourhood is one of Vancouver’s most distinctive destinations, known for its locally owned boutiques, art galleries, well-recognized restaurants and hidden bars. Whether you’re here for history, architecture, food or nightlife, this full guide to Gastown Vancouver will show you the best of it all.
The History of Gastown Vancouver
Gastown is Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, built in 1867 from a single tavern opened by John “Gassy Jack” Deighton. Its cobblestone streets, Victorian architecture and vintage lampposts still put that history on display today.
And the neighbourhood’s past is as colourful as its present. After flourishing around Gassy Jack’s saloon, Gastown became a centre of trade, only to be devastated by the Great Fire of 1886. Once rebuilt, it grew into a retail hub with stores like Hudson’s Bay Company and Woodward’s. Though the area declined during the Depression, preservation efforts in the late 20th century saved its heritage buildings. And in 2009, Gastown Vancouver was officially recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada.
Getting to Gastown Vancouver
Gastown is located on the northeast edge of downtown, just a 5-minute walk from Waterfront Station, a major hub for the SkyTrain (including the Canada Line to Vancouver International Airport), the SeaBus that connects to Vancouver's North Shore, and the West Coast Express.
Buses and bike routes also make it easy to access from surrounding neighbourhoods. If you’re arriving by car, metered parking is limited, but it couldn’t be more convenient to be dropped off by an Uber or taxi.
And if you’re staying centrally, Gastown couldn’t be closer to many hotels, including the Delta Hotels by Marriott Vancouver Downtown Suites, EXchange Hotel Vancouver and The Victorian, all of which are just steps away from the action.
Things to do in Gastown
