This week’s roundup of what’s shooting in Vancouver has a strong sci-fi and tech theme running through it.

From super-smart teens to virtual reality gone wrong to time travelers, we’ve got a list of what and who will be shooting in town in the near future. (And we didn’t even need a time machine to figure it all out!)

The new TV series Somewhere Between starts filming today (March 6) and continues until June 15.

The thriller, based on a Korean format, stars Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol) as Laura Price, a mother and news producer who has somehow obtained knowledge about when, where, and how her daughter will be murdered.

However, Laura doesn’t know the answers to two questions: who will kill her or why she will be killed. Yet in the race against time, somehow all of Laura’s attempts to keep her daughter safe inadvertently fail to change her daughter’s fate.

The cast will also include Rebecca Staab (Port Charles) and Vancouver actor Aaron Craven (Gracepoint).

Another TV series that’s beginning production on its newest season today is Project MC2, which continues shooting until May 1.

It’s a rather appropriate start date since Wednesday (March 8) is International Women’s Day and this show is designed to help break down gender barriers and counter stereotypical gender representation in entertainment. After all, their tagline is “Smart is the new cool”.

The youth series stars a group of science-savvy girls who are recruited by a secret government spy organization, NOV8.

The show stars Mika Abdalla as McKeyla McAlister (problem solver and leader), Victoria Vida as Adrienne Attoms (culinary chemist), Genneya Walton as Bryden Bandweth (tech guru), Ysa Penarejo as Camryn Coyle (engineer), Alyssa Lynch as Devin D’marco (artist), and Belle Shouse as Ember Evergreen (Earth scientist).

Shifting to sci-fi—or perhaps tech-fi—the TV pilot for the virtual reality–themed Reverie will be shot from March 13 to 30.

Sarah Shahi (Life, Alias) stars in this thriller as an ex-detective, who specialized in human behaviour, whose expertise is needed when an advanced virtual-reality program results in unexpected and hazardous consequences.

Jessica Lu (Awkward, American Horror Story: Hotel) portrays the owner of a company Reverie, which offers clients immersible custom VR programs with a neural transmitter. Problems arise when some users opt not to return to reality and their bodies wind up comatose.

Continuing with the tech-oriented theme, the crime drama TV pilot for Wisdom of the Crowdwill be shot from March 20 to April 7

Jeremy Piven (Entourage, Mr. Selfridge) stars as an innovative tech developer who creates a crowdsourcing hub to help solve his daughter’s murder and revolutionizes how crimes are solved in San Francisco.

The show is based on an Israeli format with the same title.

And yet another sci-fi series is gearing up to start shooting later this month.

Travelers, which shot Season 1 last year in town, will be back for Season 2, which shoots from March 27 to July 28.

The series stars Vancouver-based actor Eric McCormack (Will and Grace) as an FBI special agent who leads a group of time travelers from the future who send their consciousness back to the present day. They take on the lives of regular people—ranging from a stay-at-home single mother to a college heroin addict—while trying to save humanity from a troubled future.

The second season will continue with the group’s realization that their actions have changed the future in unpredictable and unexpected ways.

The cast includes MacKenzie Porter, Patrick Gilmore, Jared Abrahamson, Nesta Cooper, and Reilly Dolman.

That’s all for this week but be sure to check back in with us when we have more to tell you about what’s coming up in Hollywood North’s future.
