Filming in Vancouver: A Series of Unfortunate Events, plus shows calling it a wrap in December

December is also upon us, which means it’s almost time for the holiday season.

That also means a number of film and TV productions will be saying farewell to our fair city before the new year arrives.

But since the industry’s motto is “the show must always go on”, there are still some productions coming into town and others that are stalwartly marching on throughout the winter.

Here’s a quick rundown of the films and TV series that’ll be calling it a wrap this coming month—with a few other notes about comings and goings.

The Netflix series A Series of Unfortunate Events, which is shooting its second season, has been on hiatus since November 2 and will resume production on January 2.

The lengthy break will allow its stars to enjoy the holiday season with their families as they’ve got a yearlong run in the city. They started back on April 17 and will continue all the way until April 20, 2018.

One of the show’s stars, Neil Patrick Harris (who plays Count Olaf), revealed in an interview that he works from Monday to Thursday in Vancouver, then jets home to be with his husband David Burtka and his twin children in New York City on weekends.

This season, the show added five new cast members: Nathan Fillion, Tony Hale, Sara Rue, Lucy Punch, and Roger Bart.

They join regular cast members Patrick Warburton, Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes, Presley Smith, and K. Todd Freeman.

The good news is that the series was already renewed for a third season back in April. So it looks there will probably be more weekly jetsetting for Harris (unless he decides to move his family here)…

One feature film that is starting up this month in the province is the feature film Peace, by director Robert Port.

It’ll be shot around Vernon, B.C., from December 1 to 20, but with any luck, we may see some of the cast passing through town who unfortunately haven’t been named yet.

But if you see some big names passing through town or at the airport, don’t say we didn’t warn you!

The film is an adaptation of Richard Bausch’s book of the same name, about four soldiers in Italy during the Second World War who witness the murder of a civilian.

Port won an Academy Award for his 2003 documentary short “Twin Towers” about the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Centre.

One feature production that will finish up this month is A Dog’s Way Home, which started on October 16, will wrap on December 15.

This film, directed by Charles Martin Smith, is also an adaptation of a book, this one by W. Bruce Cameron.

The cast includes Ashley Judd, Edward James Olmos, Alexandra Shipp, and more.

Meanwhile, three TV series will be wrapping up in mid- to late December.

The Magicians will finish shooting Season 3 on December 14. The supernatural series started production back on July 11.

When Calls the Heart will finish up Season 5 only a few days before Christmas on December 21. The romantic drama started on August 22.

With similar dates but distinctly different content, The X-Filesalso finishes on the same day (December 21), having started back on August 21

Two productions that will end next week include the feature film Two/One and the TV pilot Deadly Class.
