Released in theatres on January 11, A Dog’s Way Home has quickly found a snug home in viewers’ hearts. The story follows Bella, a homeless pitbull who wanders into the life of a young man called Lucas. He falls in love with the pup and smuggles her into his building; however, Animal Control soon separates the pair. Though Bella and Lucas find themselves 400 miles apart, the tenacious pitbull is determined to reunite with her owner – so she sets out on an epic journey home, touching the lives of various animals and people she meets along the way.

The movie is based on the book by bestselling author W. Bruce Cameron, who also wrote A Dog’s Purpose (released cinematically in 2018), and stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Ashely Judd. Filming took place in Vancouver and surrounding regions like Hope and Ladner.

Feeling closer to your own pooch post-viewing? Why not bring him or her along to Vancouver to explore the background of A Dog’s Way Home in person? While you’re here, your pup will receive a royal welcome – the city is extremely pet-friendly, and there are multiple opportunities to sightsee with your pup. Here are a few of our favourites:

Situated a 40-minute drive from Vancouver along the picturesque Sea to Sky Highway, the Sea to Sky Gondola is the perfect place to take your dog for a day-long outing in the outdoors.

Hike up the challenging Sea to Sky Summit trail, then buy a “Buster the Dog Pass” to take your pooch back down in the gondola (you’ll both be paws-itively stunned by the view!). Note the Pass offers rides downhill only; if the Sea to Summit trail is too difficult for you or your pup to ascend, there are plenty of easy-grade, dog-friendly alternatives located throughout the Sea to Sky Corridor. The best part? $20 of each Buster the Dog Pass sold is donated to the Squamish SPCA.
